„It may take surprisingly long to find a new job or the ideal job may not be available. Even with more than enough openings. Finding the right company and engaging with the right person is like an art.“
Experienced leader and hiring manager at an Insurance Company
#getacoach
Everyone should have a coach.
Today I had the great opportunity to gather inside from professional, experienced executive coaches on Clubhouse. When I get asked about what I would do different if I could turn back time, investing in the right coach early in my career is the one thing I would change.
And to all great coaches and mentors out there – don’t assume the person you are mentoring, or coaching has any idea how this actually works. How to get the best value out of a mentorship or out of a coaching.
As I am passionate about developing high performing, self-organized and self-leading teams – it also means to enable people and to invest time and energy in coaching. Coaching people you have the chance to observe their strengths in daily business situations is so much easier than without the „real world context“. So you really need to help your coach to get value out of it.
For me it is easy – I have the chance to go into examples I participated in conversations or delegate something and there are obstacles or challenges coming up along the way.
The tough part as a manger is to distinguish between teaching – content (ok, my most used sentence in this context I heard is actually: „I tell you how it is…“ and coaching -where you ask questions and more questions and get people to look at situations from a meta perspective, work out goals and strategies to reach these goals. Develop action plans and motivate to execute successfully.
#howtokeeplearning
…it sounds so logical and easy, still it is rarely done.
You get the most out of learning, if you learn consistently each day and ideally at the same time.
Small learning bites are much better than a marathon followed by long breaks.
Repetition, repetition, repetition – call it review if this sound better to you.
Bedtime is a great moment to review. Give your brain a purpose at night. Learning is a perfect way to keep your brain cells working while you sleep.
Set goals and reward yourself (Look at a picture which makes you happy).
Have fun, be proud and it is normal that there are times, you feel like you make no progress.
#keepnetworking
…no gatherings – no networking? I find there are more events than anybody could possibly attend and some have really clever concepts to allow a personal interaction in small groups.
Some people build a network in connecting to everybody they can possibly find on social media sides and have thousands of connections. Are these connections, an audience, a client pool and what is the difference? It clearly depends on what you aim to achieve and you may need to use a differentiated approach of contacting the people in the network.
Looking for a next position or freelance project I highly recommend reading the book „Friend of a Friend“ written by David Burkus. Enjoy the reading and good luck and great people in your network.
